    Vernon School Motto:

Building Bridges, Expanding Opportunities, and Leaving LegaciesDr. Valerie Vacchio

Welcome to the James H. Vernon School, a public school for students in grades 3-6, fully committed to providing enriching learning experiences in a safe, caring, and supportive environment. The instructional, extra-curricular, and social-emotional programs at the Vernon School always place children first.

“Building Bridges,” the motto of the James H. Vernon School, exemplifies the learning community we strive to create for students and families. Fostering collaboration, providing opportunities for all students, and cultivating partnerships with the community are priorities. Vernon educators pride themselves on developing genuine relationships with students and are committed to growing a learning community that values high expectations and excellence for all through the 3 R’s: rigor, relevance, and relationships.

Enhancing a love and appreciation of literacy are top priorities at Vernon. One of the many ways in which we achieve this goal is through our yearlong Book of the Month selections. Moreover, we are proud of our long-standing affiliation with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Vernon is a model school which hosts visits for educators interested in learning how to successfully implement rigorous reading and writing workshops.

At Vernon, we believe the best learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships. Developing character and building emotional resiliency are important to our learning community. Vernon students participate in a variety of social-emotional and academic programs which assist them with resolving conflicts, embracing differences, and demonstrating empathy. The goal of these initiatives is to teach students the skills they need to become independent, lifelong learners.

Vernon educators strive for students to develop a broad, deep understanding of the world, make interdisciplinary connections, think creatively and critically, communicate and collaborate, design and evaluate, and utilize information to develop into career-ready students who are productive, kind, caring citizens.

Exemplary programs offered at the Vernon School include: STEM lab, technology lab, library media, makerspace, recess enrichment, before and after school clubs, Atlantis program, fine and performing arts (art, drama, music, chorus, band, choral and instrumental music lessons), physical education, intramurals, and health and wellness programs.

I invite you to visit the James H. Vernon School to observe our students first-hand and see the wonderful, innovative programs we have in place.

    Sincerely yours,

    Dr. Valerie Vacchio, Principal
