Message from the Vernon Principal: Dr. Valerie Vacchio
Vernon School Motto:
“Building Bridges, Expanding Opportunities, and Leaving Legacies”
Welcome to the James H. Vernon School, a public school for grades 3-6, fully committed to providing exemplary, enriching learning experiences for all students in a safe, caring, supportive environment. The instructional, curricular, and social-emotional programs at the Vernon School always place children first.
“Building Bridges,” the motto of the James H. Vernon School, exemplifies the learning environment we construct for students, families, and community members. Fostering collaboration, providing excellence for all students, and cultivating partnerships with community constituencies are top priorities. Vernon educators pride themselves on developing genuine relationships with students, families, and community members, and are committed to maintaining a school culture that values high expectations and excellence for all through the 3 R’s: rigor, relevance, and relationships.
Enhancing a love and appreciation of literacy is a top priority at Vernon. One of the many ways in which we achieve this goal is through our yearlong Book of the Month. Moreover, we are so proud of our long-standing affiliation with the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. Vernon is a model school which hosts visits for educators interested in learning how to successfully implement rigorous Reading and Writing Workshops.
At Vernon, we believe that the best learning emerges in the context of supportive relationships that make learning challenging, engaging, and meaningful. Building character and promoting positive social skills are very important to our school community. Vernon students participate in a variety of social-emotional and character education programs which assist students with making friends, resolving conflicts peacefully, embracing differences, and demonstrating acts of kindness. The goal of these initiatives is to define, teach, and reinforce positive and respectful behavior.
Vernon educators strive for students to develop a broad, deep understanding of the world, make interdisciplinary connections, think creatively and critically, communicate and collaborate, create, evaluate, and utilize information to help them develop into career-ready students who are productive, caring members of a global society.
Exemplary programs offered at the Vernon School include: STEM Lab, Makerspace, Recess Enrichment, Before and After School Clubs, Atlantis Program, Fine and Performing Arts (art, music, chorus, band, choral and instrumental music lessons), Physical Education, Intramurals, and Health and Wellness Programs.
I invite you to visit the James H. Vernon School to observe our wonderful students and devoted teachers engaged in learning, and to discover the variety of state-of-the-art programs available at Vernon, an elementary school that always places children first.
