A Message from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld
Speaking from one of the newly renovated high school art rooms, Dr. Seinfeld welcomes back our learning community while thanking staff members who worked throughout the summer to ensure that our schools were ready for the new school year.
Performance Brings Home Message: 'Teach Your Children Well'
In a moving, surprise performance that brought the audience to its feet, Oyster Bay-East Norwich Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld led musically talented staff members and choral students in a rendition of “Teach Your Children” to close her welcome-back speech to faculty and staff, Aug. 30, sending them off inspired and invigorated to start the year ahead.
Schools Open with New Staff and Enhancements for Success
With backpacks and school supplies in hand, 1,558 students in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District began the 2018-19 school year meeting new staff members, acclimating to new technology, engaging in new courses, and benefiting from upgraded facilities and safety measures.
Greeting students on opening day, Sept. 4, were some new faces and some old faces who have taken on new roles. At Oyster Bay High School, Dr. Peter Rufa was named Assistant Principal for grades 10-12. Dr. Rufa previously served the District as K-12 Supervisor of Fine & Performing Arts. Replacing him in that role is Mr. Anthony Femino who comes to the District from the New York City Department of Education. Ms. Laura McNamara joins the District as the K-12 Mathematics Supervisor, Ms. Emily Ann Powell has been hired as the new high school earth science teacher, and Ms. Alison Chechakos and Ms. Heather Russell will serve as special education teachers at James H. Vernon School. Ms. Erin Dubon will be the library teacher at Vernon. Her previous position as a second-grade teacher at Theodore Roosevelt School has been filled for this year by Ms. Christine Rooney, who was formerly an Academic Intervention Services (AIS) teaching assistant at the school. Ms. Brittany Ford will serve as a leave replacement for Ms. Kelly Hilt’s 3rd grade class. Ms. Ford was previously a resident substitute in the school.
