OBEN Board of Education is Invigorated by Board Appreciation Week
The Oyster Bay East Norwich Board of Education held its monthly Work Session meeting on Tuesday, November 1 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld reminded the Board and the entire community that there is still time to join her and many students in a shared reading opportunity on Monday, November 28. The book is “Flipped” by Wendelin Van Draanen. Amazon.com describes this book, “This is a classic romantic comedy of errors told in alternating chapters by two fresh, funny voices.” Director Rob Reiner made a motion picture of the book in 2010. The Oyster Bay High School and OBEN Public Libraries have extra copies to lend.
The Board discussed the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) conference held last week in Buffalo. Among the topics were “Z-Space,” a hardware and software package that allows students to experience science experiments in virtual reality before doing them in class. Also, a topic of great interest to the OBEN Board is college readiness.
The week of the conference was also Board Appreciation Week. The OBEN schools developed a schedule of activities in classrooms around the district that Board members were invited to attend. The consensus of the Board was that it was great to see the students in their environment giving the Board a better perspective which will aid in their decision making process. Board Trustee Todd Cronin said, “We do have great teachers here.”
The Board was made aware of a charity taking place now through Veterans Day to benefit those who have served in our armed services. The front lawn of OBHS is being turned into a Field of Honor. Anyone can purchase a flag with a card attached to honor someone of everyone who has served our country. Each flag is ten dollars and can be purchased by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org. The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library. All are welcome.
