OBHS Celebrates Outstanding Athletes
The Autumn Varsity Sports Season is well on its way in Oyster Bay. Many young athletes have distinguished themselves. Several fine young athletes excelled right out of the gate and were chosen by the OBHS Coaches as Athletes of the Month for October 2016.
Boys Soccer Coach Brian Donohue selected Randy Sarmiento, who is playing his first year on Varsity. Randy switched positions to play center back on the defense. He quickly established himself as the best defender in the conference, shutting down the opponents’ attacks with, what is becoming, his signature slide tackle. His confidence and poise on the field has been remarkable. In addition, his free kicks from the other side of the field keep the defense guessing. In the last game against West Hempstead, which was a must win game, he opened the scoring, converting a rebound and slipping it past the goalie.
The Boys' Cross Country Athletes of the month are seniors Jack Casey and Aidan Doxey. Aidan most recently finished in the top 50 at the St. Anthony's Invitational, and has been among the top runners in each conference race. Jack Casey has also been among the top runners in conference races, and has recorded he team's fastest 5k (18:52) and 4k (14:46) times at Bethpage. Jack and Aidan are coached by Cross Country Head Coach Kevin Cotter.
Oyster Bay High School Alum and Cheerleading Coach Christina Vaccaro had this to say about her pick, “Senior Angela Lutz has been on the Varsity Cheerleading Team since her freshman year of high school. As a strong base and back for stunt groups, Angela has proven to be a valuable team member. She is always encouraging others to improve their own skills and has been seen on the side practicing with her teammates. Angela has demonstrated leadership during stunting and on the side lines cheering on the football team.”
Girls Crew Coach Kevin Coomey choose Arianna Paone as his Athlete of the Month saying, “Junior Arianna Paone is a second year Varsity rower who has been a great leader to the team. As a rower with many years of experience prior to Oyster Bay she has polished technique that helps her move any boat she is in both quickly and efficiently. Arianna’s leadership is extremely helpful in getting her teammates integrated and enthusiastic during practice, which then leads to a high level of production. Off the water, Arianna can always be counted on to bring intensity and perseverance to the various difficult workouts we present her. Arianna will be racing in a Single this season.”
Girls Tennis Coach Greg Bilello had an easy choice picking his Athlete of the Month. Coach Bilello said, “Courtney Kowalsky is a two-time New York State and Nassau County doubles champion. She is a five-year starter on the girl’s tennis team as well as a three-year team captain. Courtney is currently undefeated at first singles in very competitive Nassau Conference IIA. She is looking forward to competing in the Nassau County Singles Tournament later in the month. She has verbally committed to continue her academic and tennis career at Brown University next year.”
