The Oyster Bay East Norwich Board of Education held its monthly Business meeting on Tuesday, January 19 at 7 pm in the OBHS Library.  The audience was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Theodore Roosevelt 2nd Grader Quinn Rainey.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld began her report by introducing Mr. Robert “B.A.” Schoen.  Mr. Schoen has served on the BOCES School Board and was recently elected to be the Area 11 Director to the New York State School Board Association.

Serving on the Board of Education is often referred to as a thankless job.  Board Trustees work long hours for no pay armed only with a desire to make sure our children receive the best education possible in a fiscally responsible way.  It is a rare occurrence when the State School Board Association takes the time to recognize outstanding Board members.  Mr. Schoen announced that four OBEN School Board Trustees have been recognized.  He explained that there are different levels of recognition.  One level is the Board Achievement Award.  Board President Ms. Ann Marie Longo and Ms. Robin Dando were presented with this award.  Board Vice President Ms. Jennifer Romeo and Mr. John McEvoy were presented with Board Excellence Awards.

The Supervisor of the Fine and Performing Arts Department, Mr. Peter Rufa, came to the podium to introduce the Board and Community to the twenty four students from Vernon and the High School who earned All-County status in music.

Mr. Valente also updated the Board and community on the status of the new Security Team which will begin on Monday, February 22.

Before the meeting ended, the Board and Administration wanted to publically thank the Town of Oyster Bay, the Department of Transportation, and Mr. Rob Brusca for their efforts in coming together as a community to address the long standing issue of snow removal on Route 106 in front of the Vernon School.

The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 1 at 7 pm in the OBHS Library.  All are welcome.
