OBHS Student is Named a NYSSMA All-State Musician
Joining top student-musicians throughout New York State, Oyster Bay High School senior Thomas Fletcher has been selected to perform in the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Winter Conference in Rochester, NY, Nov. 29-Dec. 2. Thomas, a trombone player, will represent his school by performing in Symphonic Orchestra on Sunday, Dec. 2.
Playing since the 4th grade, Thomas is a member of the Oyster Bay High School Wind Ensemble, which had the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall last year. Oyster Bay High School Band Director Mr. Matthew Sisia said, “Thomas has worked hard; he played great for his NYSSMA solo and he plays well in Wind Ensemble. We’re really proud of him.”
OBEN Boots Up 1:1 Technology Initiative to Enhance Learning
Technology has gone to the next level in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District. After a multi-year plan to build infrastructure and integrate technological resources in the classroom, the District has launched a 1:1 technology initiative – meaning students are assigned their own devices to elevate their learning.
The initiative began at the start of the school year in grades 2, 4 and 7 with the goal of adding more grades each year. Seventh graders are able to bring their devices home, while 2nd and 4th graders have 100 percent access all the time during the school day. Further supporting the expansion is the Technology Reserve Fund, approved by residents in May, 2018, for future purchases of technology equipment and to make capital improvements as they relate to technology, with voter-approval.
