Number of Athletes to Play Collegiate Sports Rises to 16

  • Sixteen Oyster Bay High School senior-athletes — about 13 percent of the 125 students that make up the senior class — have committed to playing sports at the collegiate level next year. Joining six that committed earlier in the year, 10 seniors recently signed Letters of Intent with college teams.

Track & Field athletes Christopher Syrett and Eric Chao will join the Rams at SUNY College at Farmingdale, Div. III; Lacrosse athlete Michael Ceglia will head to Palm Beach Atlantic University to play for the Sailfish, Div. II; Tennis player Patrick Maloney will play for the Wolverines at the University of Michigan, Div. I; Track & Field athlete Mikayla Cooper will join the Red Dragons at SUNY Cortland, Div. III; Wrestler Keith Cassar will wrestle for the Bisons at Bucknell University, Div I; Golfer Jordana Testa will play for the Red Dragons at SUNY Cortland, Div. III; Basketball player Gianna Gotti will join the Purple Knights at the University of Bridgeport, Div II; Baseball player Ryan Jarvis will play for the Panthers at SUNY Old Westbury, Div. III, and Fencing athlete Kate Devereaux will join the Eagles at Boston College, Div.I.

In a ceremony before their family members, coaches and high school staff members, Mr. Kevin Trentowski, Director of Athletics, Physical Education and Health, shared the outstanding athletic accomplishments of each student, which ranged from multiple All-Long Island, All-County and All-State championship titles, All-American titles and record-breaking milestones, including Gianna Gotti’s 2,229-point career in Girls Basketball. He then called students up one by one to congratulate them and pose for some photos with family members and coaches.

“These students are models of excellence both on and off the field,” Mr. Trentowski said. “Each one will be an asset to their teams and to their chosen institutions. We wish them well and believe that the skills they learned at Oyster Bay High School will help them become successful at the college level.”
