PARP Invites Children and Parents to “Catch a Dragon by the Tale.”
The greatest gift a parent can give to their child is time spent reading together. Pick a Reading Partner (P.A.R.P.) is a program sponsored by the OBEN Elementary PTA and designed to foster a lifelong love of reading in children. It also hopes to strengthen the family bond. One of the ways it does this is by encouraging parents, guardians or friends to read at home with their children for at least 15 minutes per day. The PTA has been recognized as the Nassau Region PTA PARP Award winner for their dedicated PTA unit that promotes literacy for children and their parents and for creating a program to help children learn the joys of reading. The great participation by administrators and families was noted as well as the “go green” initiative of using the school website. This year the PTA has enthusiastically launched another Spring PARP program that follows in the award winning tradition. This spring’s theme is “Catch a Dragon by the Tale.” Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child’s education. Katherine Diaz is an All-State & All-American Wrestler
Oyster Bay High School Sophomore Katherine Diaz is a two-year Varsity wrestler with a very intense work ethic. Katherine is one of the hardest workers in the wrestling room every day, who's dedication to this sport and team is nothing short of amazing. Not only does Katherine work hard daily during our team practice, but she attends Vougar Honor Wrestling every night for a second practice. Katherine has also wrestled in many outside tournaments, including Long Island Wrestling Association's Summer Heat Tournament at Hofstra University, and this year’s New York Wrestling Association for Youth (NYWAY) State Tournament where she placed 4th, earning her All-State Honors. Katherine is continuing her wrestling throughout the spring and summer and is planning on attending several different camps and clinics, as well as wrestling in more very competitive tournaments. Oyster Bay High School Varsity Wrestling Coach Doug Axman is being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his Lifetime Service to wrestling. The induction is taking place on Friday, April 28, 2017 at the Melville Marriott in Melville.
