OBEN Board of Education Recognizes Student Achievements and Hones the 2017-18 Budget
The Oyster Bay East Norwich Board of Education held its monthly Business meeting on Tuesday, March 21 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library. The audience was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Oyster Bay High School senior Steven Keehner.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld began her report by inviting the Director of the Fine and Performing Arts Department, Mr. Peter Rufa to the podium. Mr. Rufa introduced the cast of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” to perform “Edgar Allan Poe,” a song from the spring musical. Performances will be this weekend in the Oyster Bay High School Performing Arts Center (the PAC). Shows will be at 7:30 pm on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25. There will be a Sunday matinee on March 26 at 2 pm. Ticket holders for the Sunday matinee are invited to enjoy a complimentary brunch provided by the Friends of the PAC.
Mr. Rufa remained at the podium to celebrate the many accolades garnered by OBEN Art students from Roosevelt to the high school. The 2016 issue of the OBHS Art and Literary Magazine AGAPAE earned the highest award of a Gold Medal from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The threshold for receiving a Gold Medal is a judges' score of 800 or better. A perfect score is 1000. The 2016 OBHS AGAPAE received a near perfect score of 970.
Mr. Rufa continued by recognizing many students who have excelled in their individual efforts including OBHS student Patrick Conway whose artwork is part of a Long Island's Best Young Artists exhibit at The Heckscher Museum which is running now through April 9, 2017.
Athletic Director, Kevin Trentowski came to the podium to recognize the many students who excelled during the 2016-17 Winter Sports season. They were:

Supervisor of Social Studies, Career Technologies, & Service Learning, Mr. Joseph Pesqueira along with Vernon Teacher Ms. Jamie Pugh updated the Board and community on the status of the Social Studies program and where the District is in meeting their goals.
Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Michael Cipriani continued the 2017-18 Budget process with Presentation number 5. The Budget vote will be on Tuesday, May 16 at Oyster Bay High School. The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library. The budget will be officially adopted at that meeting. The topics scheduled for discussion at the meetings can be found on the website at http://obenschools.org/Page/324. All are welcome.
