OBHS Celebrates Outstanding Athletes
The Winter Varsity Sports Season is heating up in Oyster Bay. Many fine young athletes have excelled this season and were chosen by the Oyster Bay High School coaches as Athletes of the Month for January, 2017.
When asked about his choice, Girls’ Varsity Basketball Coach Sandy Rossen had this to say, “Gianna Gotti is our Athlete of the Month. Gianna ended the month December with a scoring average of 31.0 points per game, making her the leading scorer on Long Island. Gianna was also named to the All-Tournament teams for The Lady Baymen Tournament, as well as the Freeport Lady Red Devil Tournament. She also spearheaded our annual toy drive to help benefit The Gardiner Foundation, an organization in the Bronx that helps children in need.”
Bowling Coach Jay Davis picked Junior Zach Arenella as the athlete of the month representing the Baymen Boys Bowling Team. To date, Zach has produced the highest average and the highest 3 game series. A 2-year starter, Zach is an excellent example of what a student athlete should represent. He is dedicated, hardworking and always exhibits excellent sportsmanship. Oyster Bay High School and the bowling team is very proud to have Zach as a student and athlete.
Coach Jay Davis also coaches the Girls Bowling Team to which he said, “Emily Moore is the athlete of the month representing the Lady Baymen Bowling Team. To date, Emily has produced the highest average and the highest three game series. Emily is the definition of hard work and dedication. Emily exemplifies a selfless attitude and is an Oyster Bay student athlete of superb character. She utilizes the same high standards academically as she does on the athletic teams she plays on. She possesses a high degree of maturity and reliability to maintain her standards of excellence. Oyster Bay High School and the bowling team is very proud to have Emily as a student and athlete.”
Harrison Treble is the Boys Winter Track Athlete of the month. Harrison has been a member of the Varsity Winter Track team for 4 years. He has earned All-Conference & All-County honors in multiple events, holds numerous indoor track records and is the returning County Class B Champion in the Long Jump. He is currently ranked 3rd in County Class B in the triple jump and 6th in the long jump. Harrison is coached by Winter Track Coach Christopher Weber.
The Winter Cheerleading Team has a new coach this year in Chelsea Bressingham. Coach Bressingham had this to say about her pick. “Alyssa Quintana just started winter cheer this season. She is motivated to get new tumbling skills and has exceeded her goals for the season. Alyssa goes above and beyond to help out her teammates in any way she can. Alyssa’s positive attitude and courageousness to try new skills encourages others on the squad to do the same.”
