Balanced Technology Use

Balanced Technology Use

To support a balanced approach to technology, it's important to distinguish between purposeful educational use and general screen time at home. Understanding the difference between learning-focused technology use and everyday screen time can help families make informed decisions about balance.

Instructional Technology Use

  • Guided by teacher intention and instructional design
  • Aligned to clear learning objectives
  • Actively engages students in thinking, creating, or problem solving
  • Requires student interaction (writing, designing, analyzing, etc.)
  • Supports differentiation, accessibility, or personalized learning

Recreational Screen Time

  • Entertainment-focused use
  • Browsing or scrolling without a purpose
  • Independent use without structured guidance or learning goals
  • Often longer in duration and less intentionally monitored for time
  • Can include both active and passive engagement
