    Athletic Placement Process (APP)

The purpose of the statewide Athletic Placement Process (APP) physical fitness testing program is to determine the level of physical fitness students have when compared to older athletes that they will be competing with in high school programs. If your child is seeking to be part of a junior varsity or varsity high school team, a fitness test, along with a physical examination, will determine whether the appropriate level of physical development has evolved in relation to similar levels of older students (tanner test). Students must pass all required parts to be eligible for a tryout and to ensure the safety of their participation.

This program is designed for exceptional athletes. It is not intended to help schools fill out high school rosters.

Parents/guardians can expect student-athletes to be asked to complete five (5) parts of the fitness test. The test includes a mile distance run/500-yard swim for time, a shuttle agility run for time, as well as a timed core strength (curl-ups) test, upper body strength (pull ups or pushups) and flexibility (V-sit or sit & reach).

Parents/guardians are cautioned that even though an athlete may be physically ready, it does not mean that they may be emotionally or socially ready to handle the normal stress of competition or can mix with older athletes. Even though coaches set the stage for assimilation of younger students into the team structure, the younger athletes must be comfortable within this environment. Should this not be a natural adjustment, it is recommended that the athlete remain at the district's modified level or wait until high school.

    The Process:

    • The process begins with the varsity coach recommending that a middle school student be considered for the APP process. The varsity coach should only recommend an exceptional MS athlete and must complete the coach recommendation form by the date below.
      •  If a child does not receive a varsity coach's recommendation, then they do not move forward in the process.
    •  If a child receives a varsity coach’s recommendation, then the Athletic Director will implement the following steps:
      •  In accordance with OBEN Board Policy 7415, it must be confirmed by the Athletic Director that (1) the student’s academic performance is at or above average (2) the student is emotionally ready to socialize with high school-aged students. In accordance with the OBEN Athletic Code of Conduct all students are expected to be passing all subjects.
        • Student-athletes who are failing any courses during the APP clearance process will not move forward in the process.
      •  Once the above is confirmed, the AD will contact the parents/guardian to schedule a meeting to review all steps and procedures for the APP exam which include:
        •  A parent/guardian’s permission form is required to complete the athletic placement process. Both parents/guardians and athletes are asked to take the time to read the rules before signing and return it to the athletic office.
        • The athlete is evaluated by the family physician to see if they are physically ready by using their tanner score, height and weight. The District Medical Director will review this medical form for final determination.
        • The athlete takes the fitness test (needs to pass 4 of 5 elements required).
        • If the athlete passes both the physical development test and the fitness test, they are eligible to try out.

Please note that if a middle school student plans to try out for a winter high school sport through the APP process, they are not eligible to participate in a Winter I or Winter II middle school sport, as the seasons overlap.  If a middle school student plans to try out for a Spring high school sport through the APP process, they are not eligible to participate in a Winter II and Spring middle school sport, as the seasons overlap.

If a student fails more than one component of the fitness test they will not move forward in the process. There will be no re-testing beyond that point. Students are eligible to test once per season if all above criteria are met.
