Oyster Bay-East Norwich students honored in Walt Whitman Birthplace Association Poetry Contest

Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District students are making their voices heard — and earning top honors for it.
Ms. Miscioscia's 6th period English 9 Honors class has been named the First Place Grand Champion in the Class Anthology category of the Walt Whitman Birthplace Association's 40th Annual Student Poetry Contest. Selected from more than 1,600 entries submitted this year, the class was recognized by a panel of judges for the creativity, depth and originality of their collective work.
In addition, Ms. Miscioscia's 3rd period class and Ms. Kim's 3rd period class each received Honorable Mention recognition in the Class Anthology category – a testament to the strength of OBEN's English program and the talent of its student writers.
The WWBA's Annual Student Poetry Contest is one of Long Island's most celebrated literary competitions, honoring student poets in the tradition of Walt Whitman, who was born just miles away in Huntington Station.
Award recipients are invited to attend the Awards Ceremony at the Walt Whitman Birthplace on May 31. Additionally, all winning poems will be published in a commemorative print anthology.
Congratulations to all of our student poets and to Ms. Miscioscia and Ms. Kim for inspiring such exceptional work!
