Oyster Bay High School junior earns third place at Long Island Science and Engineering Fair

Oyster Bay High School junior Chrysta Thomas took third place in the medical category at the Charles Duggan Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF), a prestigious regional competition that draws some of the most advanced student researchers on Long Island. Several of her fellow Oyster Bay classmates also participated in this year's fair.
LISEF is no ordinary science fair. Students present their work to panels of professionals from local universities, scientific institutions and industries – and the judging process is rigorous. On day one, each participant presents to at least two judges. Only the top 25 percent in each category advance to a second round on day two, with final rankings determined by a formula that combines scores from both rounds and the number of judges each participant faced. The bar is high at every stage.
Chrysta competed through both rounds and earned her third-place finish against that demanding standard. First place finishers in round two are eligible – pending Scientific Review Committee approval – to advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), making Chrysta's podium finish in the medical category all the more impressive.
We are so proud of Chrysta's achievement and look forward to seeing what she does next.
