Music Buddy Days Launch: High School Musicians Inspire Elementary Students

The Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District launched its inaugural Music Buddy Days program last week with a visit from high school chamber musicians to Vernon Elementary, marking the beginning of an innovative three-part series designed to strengthen connections across the district's music pathway.
Created by Ms. Giglio-Pac, Director of Fine, Performing & Media Arts, in collaboration with the OBEN Music Department, the program brings together students across grade levels to build mentorship relationships and deepen understanding of instrumental music education.
Last week’s session connected high school musicians with Vernon's 3rd and 4th grade students at a pivotal moment in their musical journeys. Third graders will select their instruments this spring, while fourth graders – who began lessons and rehearsals this year – are preparing for their first concert performance.
Members of the high school Wind Ensemble and 5/6 Orchestra performed by instrument groups, demonstrating how band and orchestra instruments work and sound both individually and in ensemble. Students heard each instrument's unique voice before experiencing how those individual parts blend together to create rich musical performances.
The program's timing and structure are intentional, providing multiple touchpoints before students make important scheduling decisions about their music education. By experiencing instruments up close and connecting with older student mentors, younger musicians gain inspiration and practical knowledge about what lies ahead in their own musical development.
The excitement was evident as elementary students left today's session energized about their musical futures and the possibilities that await them.
Music Buddy Days continues with two additional installments:
* Part 2: 6th Grade Band/Orchestra Buddy Rehearsals at Oyster Bay High School
* Part 3: Cavalcade of Choirs Joint Rehearsal
Through this series, OBEN continues building a comprehensive music education program that connects students across grade levels and strengthens the district's commitment to the arts.
