Oyster Bay High School mathematics teacher Mr. David Lazar has earned National Board Certification, the highest certification one can achieve in K-12 education. He is the third teacher in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District to achieve the advanced credential and among only three percent of teachers nationwide who are recognized as meeting the highest standards of the profession.

“National Board Certification is the gold standard for teachers,” said Dr. Lisa Mulhall, assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, during a recent Board of Education meeting that recognized Mr. Lazar’s achievement. “He has worked on completing assessments and portfolios, submitting teaching videos and reflections on those videos, and gathering all of the evidence that shows and demonstrates to this outside, expert panel that he is not only dedicated to his students’ learning and to his own learning, but to the profession in general. It is an honor for us to recognize Mr. Lazar for this phenomenal accomplishment. We thank him for his diligence and for inspiring us all.”

Mr. Lazar is in his 15th year teaching mathematics at the middle and high school levels.  He has been teaching at Oyster Bay High School since 2015 and previously taught for the New York City Department of Education. Mr. Lazar currently teaches Math 7 Accelerated and Algebra I, and has also taught Pre-Algebra and Geometry. Outside the classroom, he is co-advisor for the middle-level Mathletes.  He has also participated in the Data Team and the School Reopening Committee.  He loves sports and for the past several years has enjoyed his role as Assistant Coach to the 7th/8th grade Spring Track and Field team. Mr. Lazar earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Economics from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree in Education, Adolescent Mathematics, 7-12, from St. John’s University.

Mr. Lazar joins Oyster Bay High School mathematics teacher Ms. Andrea Breun and Oyster Bay High School choral director Dr. Meagan Dissinger as National Board Certified teachers. They are among 2,179 teachers in New York State and 91,000 teachers nationwide who have earned the distinction.
