An Evening of Recognitions

More than 45 students from throughout the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District were honored during the district’s Board of Education meeting on June 7. Students were recognized for being published, standing up for what is right and for showing their language and science skills.

Three second graders from Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School were honored for having their poems selected as winners in the 2022 Magic Daisy Children’s Poetry Competition. Winners included Isadora Criscuola, Maxwell Kingsley and Victoria Peltzer. All three students had their poems published in the book, “Marvelous Minds: Poems Written by Children from Around the World.” During the Board meeting, the second graders read their winning poems to the community.

Oyster Bay High School student Emma Kelly was recognized for recently earning the Friedlander Upstander Award. This award is presented to Nassau County and Suffolk County students who have shown themselves to be upstanders against intolerance in all forms. This year, Kelly was the only high school student in Nassau County to receive this prestigious award, in addition to a $5,000 scholarship.

In addition, 38 Oyster Bay High School students were commended for placing in the National Spanish Examinations and in le Grand Concours, the National French Contest. Twelve students received either silver, bronze or the Certificat d’Honneur (honorable mention) for their French exam performance. Twenty-six students were recognized with gold, silver, bronze or honorable mention for their performance on the National Spanish Examinations.

Before closing out the recognition part of the meeting, seven exceptional students from Oyster Bay High School were presented with certificates for their science research and participation in the Long Island Science Congress competition. This included Alexandra Flores (honorable mention), Jonah Gluck (Achievement Award), Nathaniel Miller (honorable mention), Rachel Singer (honorable mention), Christopher Tax (honorable mention), John Vespe (Meritorious Award) and Bridget Zahradnik (honorable mention).
