OBHS Students Race to the State Championships

Two talented student-athletes from Oyster Bay High School recently qualified for the New York State Public High School Track and Field Championships. Seventh grader Nicolette Lewis and sophomore Christopher Tardugno will bring their skills to Cicero-North Syracuse High School on June 10 and 11 where they will compete with other student track stars in the state.

Nicolette earned her way to the New York State championships by winning the pentathlon in the state qualifying meet. She competed in the 100-meter hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 800-meter run, compiling 1,909 points. Nicolette is the lone seventh grader representing Nassau County in a competition dominated by upperclassmen.

According to her coach, Kevin Cotter, she has not missed practice all season and “is willing to compete and learn about any event on the track.” Nicolette is also the team’s lone pole vaulter, placing fourth in the division meet. At the county level, she helped the 4x800-meter team place fifth in the county, along with Mia Gagliardi, Jocelyn Schadler and Nicole Walsh. Mr. Cotter is confident that Nicolette has a great future in this sport and will enjoy much success in the future.

Christopher’s spring track season has been one of the most memorable in Oyster Bay High School history. He was crowned division champion in both the 1600-meter and the 3200-meter runs. At the County Class A Championships, he won the 3200-meter race and anchored the silver medal winning the 4x800-meter relay. At the Section VIII Spring Track NYSPHSAA State Qualifying Meet, Christopher won the Division Two 3200-meter race, running a personal best time of 9:58.73. He is very excited and proud to be representing Oyster Bay High School and Section VIII at the New York State Public High School Track and Field Championships where he hopes to break his own personal record by running under 9:50 in 3200 meters.

The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District congratulates both student-athletes on qualifying for the state championships and wishes them the best of luck!
