Dr. Pesqueira Named Social Studies Supervisor of the Year

Dr. Joseph Pesqueira, K-12 Supervisor for Social Studies, Career Technologies, and Service Learning for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District, has been named Outstanding Social Studies Supervisor of the Year by the Long Island Council for the Social Studies (LICSS).

Dr. Pesqueira was presented The Harry C. Charles Outstanding Social Studies Supervisor/Chairperson Award during the Council’s awards ceremony at the Marriott Melville Long Island, June 10. The award is given to supervisors who demonstrate inspiring social studies leadership, including effective techniques in supervisory practices, and exhibit a deep knowledge of social studies content and current social studies issues.

“I am truly honored to be recognized with this award and feel lucky to be supported by such an amazing group of social studies professionals,” said Dr. Pesqueira. “My five years as a social studies supervisor have been an enriching and rewarding journey because of the dialogue we share as professionals, and I am grateful for that.”

Dr. Pesqueira was nominated for the award by Oyster Bay High School social studies teacher  Ms. Lauren Harnick, who described him as a “leader in every sense of the word.”

“In my 13 years teaching and 10 years practicing law, I have never had as amazing a supervisor as Dr. Joe,” Ms. Harnick said. “He is kind, compassionate, personable, and a great listener who truly seeks to provide the best for all students and teachers.”

In addition to providing resources to support instructional growth and allowing teachers autonomy to teach their classes in a manner that best suit their individual teaching styles, “Dr. Joe is exceptional in that he understands how important relationships with people are: faculty, parents, students and the community at large,” Ms. Harnick said. “During the pandemic, Dr. Joe has provided a sense of calm and level-headed approach to assist teachers that makes all the difference during such uncertain times.”

Under Dr. Pesqueira’s leadership, students have achieved excellence at National History Day, the National Geographic Geography Bee, and the National Current Events League. Social studies faculty members have been awarded regionally and at the state level for excellence in teaching, with many presenting at regional and state conferences and workshops.

By forging connections within the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Community, Dr. Pesqueira initiated opportunities that enhance teaching and learning, such as the annual Veteran’s Day Field of Honor ceremony that recognizes our local veterans and their contributions to our country.  Through partnerships with the Oyster Bay Historical Society and Raynham Hall Museum, he provides ways to embed local history into the curriculum and bring it to life for a deeper understanding by students. Scores on social studies Advanced Placement (AP) exams have increased and continue to trend upward, and the number of students taking social studies AP courses has grown as well.

“We are so pleased that Dr. Pesqueira was selected for this well-deserved award,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Francesco Ianni. “Dr. Pesqueira continues to bring our students and District to new levels of achievement, and I know that we will continue to see new growth under his leadership in the future.”
