OBHS Students Place in Emerging Business Leaders Competition
Four Oyster Bay High School students took away top honors at the Huntington Chamber of Commerce 18th Annual Emerging Business Leaders Competition, which was held virtually this year due to the health crisis.
Seniors Faith Cammarata and Michael Maznio won second place in the Retail Marketing category and juniors Rachel Singer and Patrick Walsh took third place in the Public Relations category. Eighteen Oyster Bay High School business students competed against those from school districts across Long Island school, including Syosset, Jericho, and Hicksville.
The competition, traditionally held at St. Joseph’s College, challenges high school students to think beyond the scope of the classroom and demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities in a business environment. Students use their understanding of business to address given tasks and current issues in their category of choice and can participate as a team of two or individually in the competition. Categories include Entertainment Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Graphic Design, Hospitality Services, Human Resources, Not-for-Profit Fundraising, Public Relations, Retail Marketing, Sports Marketing, Travel and Tourism, and Interviewing.
“This competition is an amazing learning experience for students who work independently to create a presentation and present it to a panel of industry professionals,” said business teacher Ms. Tara Beal. “While this virtual event was different than we are used to, the day went off without a hitch and the students were successful in navigating through this competition. I am so proud of the work of all of our students and commend our category winners on their achievements. Participation in this competition provides students with numerous transferrable skills that they will carry throughout college and their careers.”
Other students who participated by category include seniors David Cohen and Joshua Armon– Entrepreneurship, sophomores Anna Pace and Olivia Milana – Entrepreneurship, seniors Skylar McEvoy and Anthony Misilli– Graphic Design, senior Jillian Vicari– Interviewing, senior Grady Nesis – Interviewing, juniors Vincent Arnedos and Alexa Grassi – Public Relations, juniors Bradley Lopes and Emily Curry – Retail Marketing, seniors William Iannetta and Christopher Duras– Sports Marketing, and juniors Laura Castrogiovanni and Elisia Gallo– Sports Marketing.
