Erica Duke is a New12 Scholar Athlete

She’s a three-season athlete who had her eye on becoming a News12 Scholar Athlete since she learned about the honor as a freshman. Now, Oyster Bay High School senior Erica Duke is living that dream. While practicing social distancing, she accepted an oversized cardboard check for $1,000 from News12’s Sports Director Mr. Kevin Maher, in conjunction with Bethpage Federal Credit Union, and is featured in a News12 segment at http://longisland.news12.com/clip/15064401/scholar-athlete-erica-duke.

Erica has charted her high school career with the same focus that led her to this distinction.

“As a young, aspiring athlete, I looked up to the upperclassmen from day one on my sports teams at the high school. I knew of this award since I was a freshman and watched some of my teammates win it, and I remember thinking that, hopefully, that would be me someday,” she said. “Winning this award is a sign to me that my hard work has not gone unnoticed, and it serves as a reminder to always put my all into everything I do and, with that, the positive results will come,” she said.

Erica challenged herself on and off the field. She played three varsity sports each year throughout high school—soccer, track and field, and lacrosse, “not for the purpose of winning an award, but for the purpose of being part of a team which is something special,” she said.

Erica was captain of each varsity team she played on, and broke the indoor track school record for girls’ long jump, triple jump and high jump.

A leader among her peers, she is the Student Council Executive Board President and a member of math honor society and holds office in National Honor Society as well as offices for music and foreign language honor societies.

A gifted musician, she plays the French horn in Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Marching Band and the pit orchestra for high school musicals. She is an All-County musician and an All-State alternate.

Among her other awards and distinctions, she is an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar, a Nassau County Class “B” County Champion in the Triple Jump for Winter Track, Nassau County Conference 6 Champion in the Long Jump and Triple Jump, received the “Triple C” Varsity Sport Award for participating in three varsity sports teams, was a recipient of the George Eastman Young Leaders Award and is a Jack Hardiman Memorial Scholarship recipient.

“Working hard on my sports teams and in the classroom has strengthened my drive and determination to succeed,” Erica said. Next year, she will attend the University of Richmond where she plans to study economics with a focus on mathematics.
