OBHS Senior is NYS Football Scholar Athlete of the Year
Demonstrating excellence on the playing field and in the classroom, Oyster Bay High School senior Sean O’Toole was named the New York State Class B Football Scholar Athletes of the Year for 2019 by the New York State High School Football Coaches Association (NYSHSFCA). He is the first Oyster Bay High School football player in 37 years to earn this award.
Sean, a starting quarterback and captain of the Baymen varsity football team, was nominated for the award by his football coach Mr. Dan Ruskowski.
“As Sean's coach, I saw his ability to accept and overcome challenges as a great asset,” Mr. Ruskowski said. “This mentality, mixed with a self-driven passion to be the best, is very admirable. This drive is evidenced by the honors and Advanced Placement courses he takes, his leadership skills and the hard work he puts into growing the football program. As the New York State Class B Football Scholar Athlete, Sean shows how this title symbolizes more than football and education, it also exemplifies Sean’s ability to be an outstanding role model in all aspects of his life.”
Sean, who received the award at the recent NYSHSFCA Awards Banquet at the Turning Stone Casino Resort in Verona, New York, said, “I was humbled to receive this honor. I put in four years of hard work in school and on the field; I played well and did my best in school and this award is a combination of both."
Sean, who is finishing high school with a 108 grade-point average, plans to study engineering in college and was recently accepted to the University of Virginia. He’s waiting to hear back from other top tier schools before making his final choice.
