Two OBHS Educators Named Master Teachers

Oyster Bay High School teachers Mr. Stephen Acquaro and Mr. Andrew Schlendorf have been named New York State Master Teachers, an honor that places them among the top K-12 educators across the state who are leaders in their fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).


Mr. Acquaro is in his fifth year teaching the 7th grade science  enriched curriculum at Oyster Bay High School. As lead research   teacher and a co-teacher in the College Board’s Advanced Placement  Capstone Research program, now in its third year, and the Advanced   Placement STEM Research program, currently in its second year, Mr. Acquaro has played an integral role in the formation of the high   school’s Science Research Program and has guided students to achieve honors in competitions, such as the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair.


Mr. Acquaro earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education and Biology from Hofstra University and Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University. He worked in medical research before pursuing a career in education. Outside the classroom, he advises the 7th & 8th Grade Student Councils and Odyssey of the Mind, a creative problem-solving club that competes against area school districts.


Mr. Schlendorf is in his eighth year teaching at Oyster Bay High School     and teaches Advanced Placement Physics, Regents Physics, Introduction   to Engineering and college-level engineering through a partnership with   Stony Brook University. As a teacher within the Science Department, Mr.  Schlendorf has worked to mentor new teachers, create initiatives to try to   eradicate single-use plastic water bottles in the high school and educate   all  students in the District about the 2017 solar eclipse.  He is also the  FIRST Tech Challenge robotics coach for the high school. 


Mr. Schlendorf earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Material Sciences from Duke University and his Master of Arts in Secondary Science Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He taught physics and astronomy in Brooklyn, NY for three years before coming to Oyster Bay-East Norwich.



Working in partnership with the State University of New York and the Jill Simons Math for America Program, the New York State Master Teacher Program brings more than 1,200 of the highest-performing STEM teachers back to the classroom to establish an expert community dedicated to developing expertise in the areas of content, pedagogy, and students’ families and communities. Throughout their four-year participation, teachers engage in peer mentoring, attend and create intensive content-oriented development opportunities, work closely with pre-service and early career fellows to develop future world-class educators, attend required meetings at their SUNY campus and participate in several professional development sessions each year.  


 “It’s inspiring to work with like-minded individuals to expand my ability to reach my student researchers,” said Mr. Acquaro, who is in his second year of the program.


Mr. Schlendorf, who was recently accepted to the program, added, “I’m very excited to collaborate with other engineering teachers and work with forward-thinking educators on developing curriculum and programs that can help battle climate change in New York.”
