OBEN Students Named All-County Musicians
Nearly 30 student-musicians from the District were selected to perform at the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Music Festival at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Greenvale, Jan. 11 and Jan.17-19. The honor places them among the best student-musicians across the county.
Selections for the festival are based on New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) evaluations and teacher recommendations.
Chosen to perform in the Division V instrumental ensemble are Oyster Bay High School seniors Aavi Gupta on trombone, Sophie Mejia on trumpet, Kristen Aasheim on clarinet, Erica Duke on French horn, and junior Jillian Haguisan on flute. They will perform on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. Additionally, Jillian and Erica received a second honor as All-State alternates for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Winter Conference, which took place in Rochester, NY, Dec. 5-8.
Choral students to perform at the Division V level include juniors Alessandra Martorella and Lauren Swezey. They will perform on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 pm.
Selected for the Division IV instrumental ensemble are sophomores Kevin Biggiani on trombone and French horn players Taylor Hall and Elisia Gallo. Sophomore Catherine Cannizzaro was selected for the choral ensemble. Both concerts will perform on Friday, Jan. 17 at 8 pm. Taking the stage for the Division III ensembles on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m., are eighth graders Franchesca Alejo on French horn, Chiara Rutigliano on trombone, Ciara Barefoot on bass trombone and choral singers Grace Curry and Brooklyn Matt.
From James H. Vernon School, sixth graders Ethan Fernandez on tuba and choral singers Juliana Grippo and Talene Mastacciuola will perform at the Division II level on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. Fifth graders selected for Division I ensembles include Mikal Memon on violin, Chase Lordi on alto saxophone, Maalika Mehta on French horn, trombone players Aari Gupta, William Nobel, Chrysta Thomas and choral singers Maureen Bradley, Sienna Graber, Emma Hampton, and James Ortiz Zavala. Their ensembles take place on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m.
These achievements were made possible through the guidance of high school band and wind ensemble teacher Mr. Matthew Sisia and chorus teacher Dr. Meagan Dissinger; middle level band teacher Mr. Michael Giannetta and chorus teacher Ms. Melissa Kozee, and elementary band teachers Mr. Joe Devassy and Ms. Lauren Macy, and chorus teacher Mr. Louis G. Costidis.
“We are delighted that our students will have the opportunity to expand their skills and grow as musicians by participating in these countywide ensembles,” said Fine and Performing Arts Supervisor Mr. Anthony Femino. “I commend our students and music staff for their hard work and dedication to excellence.”
