Meet October's Athletes of the Month

Oyster Bay High School kicked off its “Athletes of the Month” series, a tradition of recognizing student athletes who exhibit qualities that make them exemplary role models for their teammates. Coaches selected the following students as October’s Athletes of the Month.

Jenny collette  Junior Jenny Collette has earned the honor for Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey. Jenny has   been a starter on the varsity team since 8th grade and plays center midfield “where   she does an incredible job of keeping the ball on our offensive half,” said Coaches   Lauren Scripture and Bridget Lincoln.

“Jenny jabs the ball away from opponents to gain possession and move us up the   field,” Coach Scripture said. “Her stick skills are among the best in Nassau County.”

Jenny has scored nine goals and has had two assists so far in the season, including   two game winning goals.

Miriam Coor  Junior Miriam Coor, who has been rowing for four seasons since her freshman year,   is Athlete of the Month for the Varsity Crew Team. Miriam finished 1st place Novice   8+ freshman year at the New York State Championship and had a fabulous final   finish at the New York State Championship in 2019, according to Coach Kathleen   Brown.

“We are very proud that Miriam represented Oyster Bay at the highly prestigious,   international Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston earlier this month,” Coach   Brown said. “Miriam is a fierce rower, always striving to improve with daily practices and   workouts. She has a quiet demeanor, with a determined spirit that positively influences those around her.  Varsity, novices and middle schoolers, alike, are inspired by her disciplined dedication.”

Erica Duke  The Athlete of the Month for the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team is Erica Duke. Erica, a   senior and captain this year, has led the team with her leadership skills and soccer   versatility for the past four years, according to Coaches Nicole Schwartz and Michael   Montello.

“Duke’s speed, strength, precise assists and powerful shots have helped the team   reach success,” Coach Schwartz said.

This year, Erica has not only played positions such as forward and outside midfield,   but she has also played on the defensive end.

“When on the field, Erica’s determination and drive is contagious; while off the field, she continues to hold high expectations for both herself and her teammates,” Coach Schwartz said. “A great role model, teammate, and an ever-growing intellectual, Erica Duke highly deserves this Athlete of the Month Award.”

Members   of a team that is currently 10-0, both girls endure long workouts and strenuous   training on a daily basis, according to Coaches Kevin Cotter and Kristen Larke.

“While entering a varsity sport as freshmen can be a challenging adjustment, Mia   and Sophia have nearly perfect attendance, are rarely injured and show genuine   gratitude for being part of such a close-knit team,” Coach Cotter said.

Juniors Rachel Kowalsky and Karina Khaledi are Athletes of the Month for Girls Varsity Tennis. Rachel is a three-year starter and currently a second singles player for the team. So far this season, she is a perfect 9-0 at her position.

Rachel Kowalsky Athlete of Month for tennis  “Rachel plays tennis with finesse,” said Coach Greg Bilello. “She doesn't overpower   her opponents, but rather hits accurate shots while utilizing the entire court. She is   a positive influence on our extremely young varsity team and leads by example.”

Karina has been playing for the team since she was in 8th grade. She currently   plays first doubles with her partner Sabrina Rezk. Karina's doubles team has a   record of 6-3 in Conference III at this point in the season.
