Meet Dr. Bel, K-12 LOTE/ENL Supervisor

Dr. Bel, LOTE-ENL Supervisor  The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District welcomes Dr. Marisa Bel,   Ph.D., as K-12 Supervisor of Languages Other Than English/English as a New   Language (LOTE/ENL). She replaces Ms. Liliana Policano who retired in June.

Dr. Bel hails from Albany and brings 14 years of administrative experience   working in a similar capacity for the Bethlehem Central School District in   Delmar, New York. Dr. Bel said she relocated to Long Island for the job   opportunities and to learn and grow professionally.

“I am already being stretched and challenged professionally,” she said, “which   is exactly what I wanted.”

Relocating is not a foreign idea to Dr. Bel. She was born in Spain, where her father was stationed as a member of the United State Air Force. Her family moved around the United States for most of her childhood, relocating about six times. Through that experience, she developed a love for travel, exploring, and making new friends, she said.

Compassionate and courageous, Dr. Bel has been a leader in advocating for equity and inclusiveness among all student populations, and is proud of the work she has done in helping students and the school community expand their worldview.

“Researchers say that the ability to perspective–take is essential in developing empathy, self-awareness, and for successful collaboration,” Dr. Bel said. “There can be no better way to do this than learning languages and developing cultural understandings.”

Dr. Bel earned a Doctor of Philosophy, Educational Administration and Leadership, from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany. She has a Master of Education from The College of Saint Rose and a Bachelor of Arts from SUNY Albany. She has New York State certifications in Spanish, 7-12 and School District Administration.

Outside of the District, Dr. Bel is a mother of two teenage daughters and in her spare time enjoys yoga, gardening, the beach and home renovation projects.
