OBEN Superintendent Asks Staff to 'Know Thy Impact' as New Year Begins

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld welcomed back faculty and staff, Sept. 3, with a presentation that urged teachers to “know thy impact.”

Expressing the “awesome responsibility” teachers have in shaping students’ futures, she reminded staff of the importance of framing every lesson by clearly addressing these questions: What do we do? Why do we do what we do? And how do we know that we are making a difference in the life of every student?

She built on her ongoing theme of the 3Rs – rigor, relevance and relationships— in the successful instruction of all students by exploring two more Rs–responsibility (collective and individual) and results.

“We know students are more likely to meet our rigorous standards if they are truly engaged with personalized learning, an important focus of our collective work this year,” Dr. Seinfeld said. “Students need to know what they are learning, why they are learning it and we must create pathways toward this learning with clear learning targets and appropriate assessments and feedback. Our students’ success is our success,” she said.

Punctuating her “know they impact” theme, she shared an inspirational You Tube video “Because of a Teacher (A Tribute to All of Those Making a Difference)” by John Spencer, which garnered cheers from the audience. The video can be viewed at this link:

Following District tradition, the event featured a beautiful performance by the Oyster Bay Chamber Singers who sang Billy Joel’s “Oyster Bay” under the direction of Dr. Meagan Dissinger.

The morning also provided an opportunity to welcome new staff members, as well as staff who moved into new positions, and thank administrators, clerical staff, support staff and custodians who have worked tirelessly during the summer in preparation for the new school year.  Improvements to facilities were also announced, including air conditioning in the high school auditorium and in classrooms, a new field house at James H. Vernon School, and safety enhancements to improve traffic flow near the elementary schools.
