Oyster Bay High School’s Athletics Department has proudly announced its June selections for “Athlete of the Month.” The athletes were selected by their coaches and chosen for exhibiting qualities that make them exemplary role models for their teammates, such as leadership, dedication, attitude, level of improvement, and skill. This month’s athletes represent Baseball, Crew, Golf, Lacrosse, Tennis and Track & Field.

Sophomore Matt Yerkes is the Athlete of the Month for Baseball. “Matt was our number one pitcher all season,” said Coach Tom Pisani.  “In game one of the playoffs against Cold Spring Harbor, Matt threw a 93 pitch complete game allowing only 4 hits while striking out 7 in a 2-1 Baymen victory.  Matt also delivered at the plate, hitting a grand slam in game three of the series,” he said.  “Matt led the team in wins on the hill and RBI’s at the plate.”

Freshman Alexa Grassi is Athlete of the Month for Crew. Alexa is described as being a “dedicated rower who is always supportive of her fellow teammates.”

“She is present and involved in every practice and competition with a winning attitude, said Coaches Jason Moskowitz and Kathy Brown. “This athlete shows fortitude and boosts confidence of those around her. Always ready with a smile and a kind word, she is a generous person who embodies camaraderie, energy and team spirit,” they said.

Freshman Mike Barbera played number one for the Golf team this season, earning him the title of Athlete of the Month. According to Coach Bobby Kopp, he posted a nine-hole average of 48, which is a seven stroke improvement from last season. “Mike is going to be a great player for Oyster Bay High School in the future,” Coach Kopp said.

Freshman Bridget Zahradnik is Athlete of the Month for Girls’ Lacrosse. Bridget “did nothing but work from day one,” said Coach Charles Rizzuto. “Her improvement in all phases of the game is admirable and something that should be celebrated. She worked her way into a starting role as a defensive midfielder and earned the respect of her teammates very quickly, “he said.

Bridget ended up being “one of the best help defenders and is going to be counted on tremendously in the coming years as she continues to broaden her role and impact on the field,” he added.

Kenshin and Ryoma Hattori, a junior and sophomore, respectively, are the Athletes of the Month for Boys’ Tennis. They were a combined 22-6 for the season, winning All-Division honors at first doubles. “Even though they were first-year players, they took on a leadership role by coming early to every practice to hit with many of the younger players,” said Coach Glen Steinberg.

Senior Maggie McNamara is Athlete of the Month for Spring Track.

“In the Division Meet Maggie ran the 1500m and the 3000 meter races which is a very tough double, and then came back to help the 4 x 800m relay team take 3rd place,” said Coach Kevin Cotter.  “She scored in all events, and the team would not have won without her effort. She covered more distance than anyone on the team. She didn't complain or even hesitate. She had a job to do, and did it.”

In addition, Maggie also helped organize the 2nd Jackie Henderson Memorial Mile Race that took place on  June 2nd.

“This takes a lot of energy and time and Maggie has been hard at work ensuring that Jackie, a former long distance standout at Oyster Bay, will be forever remembered, and part of our program,” Coach Cotter said. “Maggie will be attending Amherst College in the fall of 2019. She will be greatly missed by the Cross Country and Track and Field program.”

Congratulations, athletes!
