LEGO Robotics Team Wins 2 Awards at Regionals
Marking a “first” for the district, Oyster Bay High School’s LEGO Robotics Team, titled “Jedi of the Bay,” captured two awards at the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Regional Tournament at Mineola High School, Jan. 26. The team, made up of six 7th graders, won the Alliance Award for earning the highest score in the Alliance round and the Core Values-Teamwork Award for proving that the “whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” In the Alliance round, teams pair with other teams to compete. Both awards were constructed out of colorful LEGO pieces.
Students Quentin Castellano, Christopher Dean, C. J. Villegas, Deanna Bessart, Quintin Martin and Nate Miller, worked since September designing and programming their robot, “Plankton,” under the supervision of computer science teacher and club advisor Ms. Suprabha Malhar-Jain and science and technology teaching assistant Ms. Maria Malzone. This is the first time these students have competed in this competition.
“We had many different designs for the robot so it was an ongoing process,” said Quintin Martin. “The competition was exciting but at the same time nerve-wracking because you know your team is counting on you to execute your part of the equation, but I feel we all learned a lot.”
“Our team felt really proud because we were the only team to win two awards,” Deanna added.
For part of the competition, the team completed two projects that were displayed on tri-fold poster boards. First, they had to show how their team exemplified the FIRST LEGO League Team core values: discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion and teamwork. In another, they had to develop an idea that would help the International Space Station. Their project was on “Augmented Reality Goggles for Microgravity Gameplay and Communication.”
“We are very proud of the students’ hard work and determination,’ said Ms. Malhar-Jain and Ms. Malzone. “The students exhibited great teamwork and they are excited about competing in more events in the future.”
