Oyster Bay High School’s Department of Athletics proudly announces its November selections for “Athlete of the Month.” Athletes are selected by their coaches and chosen for exhibiting qualities that make them exemplary role models for their teammates, such as leadership, dedication, attitude, level of improvement, and skill.

Junior Giselle Grassi is in her third year on the Girls’ Varsity Crew Team and has achieved much success.  She placed third in her Varsity Single at the New York State Championship Regatta, raced on Team USA and won two national championships. Giselle was recently chosen to represent the Oyster Bay Team for the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. “Giselle is an excellent leader and organizer, and she enthusiastically encourages and supports our younger rowers,” said Coach Kathy Brown.  “All of her teammates look to her as a role model for her hard work and dedication to the sport and her team. Congratulations, Giselle!”

Seniors Brian Casey and Isaac Luckman are the Athletes of the Month for Boys’ Varsity Cross Country. Brian recently was awarded the Sportsmanship Award by Section VIII, which is given to only three boys in Nassau County. He is on his way to his third New York State Championship and earned All-County status for the first time in his career this season. “Brian has been an excellent leader and role model for his teammates,” said Coach Kevin Cotter, who leads the team with Assistant Coach Bradley Rangell.

Isaac, who was injured throughout the season, never gave up in spite of setbacks throughout the season. In his final race, The Clint Miller Invitational at Bethpage, he was the Baymen`s top finisher, running his fastest time of the season and becoming the newly declared "King of Clint." “Both seniors should be congratulated for a job well done,” Coach Cotter added.

The Varsity Football Team recognizes Liam Colvin as Athlete of the Month. Liam is a senior and a two-way starter that has played as a Power Back, Receiver, Strong Safety and Special Team’s player. “He played wherever the team needed him and excelled at all the positions,” said Coach Joe Knoll. Liam opened the season with a long touchdown against Friends and ended the season with an opening second half kickoff return of 77 yards against East Rockaway.  On defense, he helped solidify the team’s defense and was a tenacious tackler from his strong safety position. Liam led the team in passes defended. “With his success on the field and confidence in the classroom, he has developed a dynamic personality,” Coach Knoll added. “Regardless of the situation, our team knew that if we had him, we had a chance for success. He truly ANCHORED DOWN.”

Junior George Anagnostopoulos is the Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team’s Athlete of the Month. During a difficult month in which the team was tested on the field, Captain George Anagnostopoulos was selfless in his leadership during games and in practices. He played every position on the field and constantly pushed his teammates to be better. Playing in the center of the field, he was often tasked with playing the whole field. “His tireless efforts were a big part of the team,” said Coach Brian Donohue and Assistant Coach George Costidis. “On the practice field, he keeps the team composed and focused on the task at hand.”

The Athlete of the Month for Girls’ Varsity Volleyball is Reilly Iles.  Reilly is a four-year Varsity player, two-year captain as well as a two-year All-County player.  Reilly helped bring the team to a 12-2 season and the Nassau County Championship game, according to Coach Jen Iles and Assistant Coach Victoria Wink.

Congratulations, athletes!
