Recently accepted to Stanford University with hopes of pursing a medical career, Jessica is one of 30 scholar-athlete standouts chosen by News 12/Bethpage Federal Credit Union throughout the year. In addition to taking a rigorous course load, Jessica has been researching CFTR genes in Cystic Fibrosis under the mentorship of doctors at Cold Spring Harbor National Laboratory for the past two years and will be presenting her research in early April. Prior to that commitment, she conducted research on genetically modified food at the Grow More Foundation in Stony Brook.

Jessica is vice president of the Oyster Bay High School Executive Board and secretary of National Honor Society. She is a mentor to an Oyster Bay High School student through the athletic leadership program, is co-founder and president of the Oyster Bay High School Baymen Club and is a member of numerous departmental honor societies, including math, social studies, foreign language, and music. She also plays the flute in the Oyster Bay High School Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Marching Band and Pep Band.

Athletically, Jessica is a six-year starter in singles for the Varsity Tennis Team and has an overall five-year record of 51-13, according to her coach Mr. Gregory Bilello. She was named All-Conference and a scholar-athlete five years in a row, and has captained the team for the past two years.

“Jessica has a remarkable ability to do many activities at an extremely high level,” said Coach Bilello. “She runs clubs, plays an instrument, earns excellent grades, conducts genetic research, and still finds time to excel in two varsity sports…I have had some amazing tennis players at Oyster Bay High School the past five years, all-county players and even state champions, but I have never coached an individual with multi-level talent like Jessica Layne’s.”

Coach Rizzuto added, “Not only does Jessica work hard, she manages to be successful in everything that she does and I can’t think of anyone more deserving to win this award.”

“Jessica has been an extremely hard working student athlete since she entered Oyster Bay High School,” Mr. Kevin Trentowski. “The Oyster Bay Athletic Department has a lot to be proud of and we share in Jessica’s excitement over receiving this well-deserved award.”
