Readers’ Theater Explores the World of Author Jan Brett
Two stories by children’s author and illustrator Jan Brett were brought to life when Roosevelt Elementary School second graders in Ms. Alison Skoczdopole’s class performed a Readers’ Theater that featured The Three Snow Bears and The Trouble with Trolls.
Standing on risers in simple costumes consisting of white T-Shirts and hats, students first entertained family and friends with a reading of The Three Snow Bears, a retelling of the Goldilocks story that takes place in the Arctic where the Inuits and animals share the landscape. While Aloo-ki, a curious Inuit girl, discovers the snow bear’s igloo and eats their soup and naps in their beds, the snow bear family spots Aloo-ki’s sled dogs, which were floating off on an ice floe, and rescues them.
After a quick costume change, students performed a reading of The Trouble with Trolls, a story of a group of trolls who live on Mount Baldy and want a dog, and a brave girl named Treva who protects her dog from the trolls by outwitting them, one by one, until she reaches the top of the mountain.
Students swiftly moved each story along by taking turns approaching the microphones and reading their assigned portions of each script.
According to Roosevelt Elementary School Principal Ms. Tami McElwee, “The goal of the Readers’ Theater is not to memorize lines or wear elaborate costumes, but rather to focus on reading the text with expressive voices and gestures.”
This performance was the second of five second-grade classes that will perform a Readers’ Theater throughout the year. The performances are coordinated by Literacy Coach Ms. Chris Bartell and Library Media Specialist Ms. Rosann Davidson, in collaboration with art teacher Ms. Meredith Brustman, who designs a mural as a backdrop, and music teacher Ms. Brenda Murphy, who leads the students in a song.
Teachers praised the students for a job well done and the audience echoed that sentiment with applause. The program ended with refreshments provided by the PTA.
