Vernon Students Design Valentines for Veterans

  • With sentiments that acknowledged their courage, bravery and valor, Vernon School students expressed their gratitude to those who served our country by designing Valentine’s Day cards as part of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Valentines for Veterans program. The cards will be distributed to veterans at American Legion and Veteran of Foreign War (VFW) Posts, as well as other posts, hospitals and nursing homes, according to Town officials.

Vernon School Principal Dr. Valerie Vacchio and fourth- grade teacher Ms. Sandra Griffin, accepted a special proclamation at the Town of Oyster Bay meeting, Feb. 6., where photos were taken with Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the entire Town Board. In recognition of their participation and hard work, each student will be awarded a certificate from the Town of Oyster Bay.

“We are delighted to be a part of a program that encourages our students think of others, to understand the impact others have made in our country, and to have the opportunity to honor them with these cards and their kind words of gratitude and appreciation,” said Dr. Vacchio.

Using markers and construction paper, many students designed cards that had pop-out decorations or images of the American flag in the shape of a heart. Some of the sentiments they shared were, “On this day, you have come a long way. Thanks for serving. Another student wrote, “Thank you for being strong, brave and courageous and for risking your life for people like me.”
