Students in the Oyster Bay – East Norwich School District are taught Social Studies from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Our Social Studies instruction is aligned with the New York State Social Studies Framework for grades K-12. The New York State Social Studies curriculum is based on the following five academic standards: the History of the United States and New York, World History, Geography, Economics, and Civics, Citizenship, and Government. There are two Social Studies Regents exams which are required for high school graduation in New York State. The Regents exam in Global History and Geography is given in grade ten and covers the two-year Global History sequence taught in grades nine and ten. The Regents exam in United States History and Government is given to students at the end of eleventh grade.
The Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District is committed to having students make connections with the curriculum to their community which is rich in historical significance. To that end, the district provides experiences both within and outside the classroom for students to explore the importance of Social Studies as it relates to their academic program. In addition, the Social Studies Department also offers extracurricular activities such as mock trial, community service including the Interact Club which is sponsored by Rotary International, and student internships.
