OBEN Board of Education Celebrates Hard Working Students and Staff Members
The Oyster Bay East Norwich Board of Education held its monthly Business meeting on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library. The audience was led in the Pledge of Allegiance by James H. Vernon School fifth grader Quentin Castellano.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld began her report by inviting the Oyster Bay High School Student Council President Kimia Khaledi to the podium to update the Board and community on the activities of the Student Council.
The OBHS Student Council will be hosting and awards event for the Academic and Career students to honor retiring teacher Ms. Ellen Rotollo. The Student Council also has plans for a Dedication Garden. People will be able to buy bricks for the garden.
Dr. Seinfeld reminded the Board and Community about the Budget Vote and Trustee Elections to be held at Oyster Bay High School on Tuesday, May 16 from 7 am until 9 pm. The 2017-18 Budget comes in under the State Tax Levy limit and is the lowest budget to budget increase in decades.
There are two seats on the Board of Education up for election. Ms. Jennifer Romeo’s term is up and she has decided not to run for re-election. Mr. John McEvoy’s term is also complete. He will seek re-election. The deadline to register as a candidate was April 17. Dr. Aliex Ross was the only person to come forward to run. Therefore, this year’s election will be uncontested. Congratulations to Mr. McEvoy and Dr. Ross. The District bids farewell to Ms. Romeo for her hard work, dedication and service to the Oyster Bay-East Norwich community. The last day to register to vote is Thursday, May 11. All the information about the budget vote is on the District website at http://ny01913874.schoolwires.net/domain/29
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld invited the Board and the entire community to join her and many students in a shared reading opportunity on Wednesday, May 3 at 7 pm in the OBHS Library. The book is “Mockingbird” by Kathryn Erskine. A Kirkus starred review says, "This heartbreaking story is delivered in the straightforward, often funny voice of a fifth-grade girl with Asperger's Syndrome." The Oyster Bay High School and OBEN Public Libraries have extra copies to lend.
Although not on the agenda, Dr. Seinfeld wanted the community to know about the debut performance of the new Vernon Drama Club this Friday, April 28 at Vernon at 7 pm in the Vernon Gym. Rehearsals have been going very well and the audience will be in for a real treat as they proudly present The Lion King Jr. Admission is free.
To conclude her report, Dr. Seinfeld introduced and honored the staff members being recommended for tenure. It was an impressive group of workers who have made a tremendous contribution to the schools and community. A few of those recognized were granted tenure earlier this year, but invited to the Board meeting to be celebrated with their class of 2017. The tenure recipients were: Assistant Business Official Ryan Butler, 3rd grade Teacher Jillian Duval, OBHS Middle School Assistant Principal Lara Gonzalez, Director of Special Services Ellen Loewy, OBHS Assistant Principal Timothy McCarthy, Roosevelt Elementary School Principal Tami McElwee, and School Psychologist Tracy Vieweg.
Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Dr. Lisa Mulhall began her report by inviting the Supervisor of the Science and Technology Departments Janna Ostroff to the podium. Ms. Ostroff, in turn, introduced the Board and community to two OBHS Seniors who took part in the “Partners for the Future” program at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, Owen McEvoy and Kimia Khaledi. Owen and Kimia presented a brief synopsis of their research into finding a cure for pancreatic cancer. This is a fantastic opportunity that many OBHS students have taken advantage of over the years to attain experience that high school students and even college students never get the chance.
The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 2 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library. The topics scheduled for discussion at the meetings can be found on the website at http://obenschools.org/Page/324. All are welcome.
