OBEN Board of Education Adopts the 2017-18 School Budget, whose 0.78% Increase is the Lowest in Decades

The Oyster Bay East Norwich Board of Education held its monthly Work Session meeting on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Laura Seinfeld invited the Board and the entire community to consider attending a Family Forum at Jericho High School on May 24. OBHS Social Worker Mr. Matt Brown and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Seinfeld were involved in the planning.  This is a family IMPACT (increasing Mindful Parenting Among Community Teams) Forum that is a joint effort of the Northeast Superintendent Quadrant which includes OBEN, Plainview Old-Bethpage, Jericho, Syosset, and Locust Valley, among other districts.

The forum will focus on student stress, substance abuse and the art of healthy parenting and will include keynote speaker Dr. Stephen Dewey who is renowned for his research on the impact that alcohol and other drugs have on the developing brain.  In addition to the keynote, there will be breakout sessions, and our own Matt Brown is likely to serve as one of the facilitators.

The Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment Dr. Lisa Mulhall spoke to the Board and community about College, Career, and Life Readiness.  The Supervisor of Counseling Services Sabrina Meehan and Oyster Bay High School Principal Sharon Lasher assisted in the presentation.  Ms. Lasher mentioned Career Day for grades 10 through 12 held on December 2, 2016 and announced that there would be a Career Day for 8th graders on Wednesday, June 7, 2017.

The Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Michael Cipriani continued the 2017-18 Budget process with a presentation which included a Budget Summary and Review of Capital Reserve Projects as well as an explanation of the May 16, 2017 Ballot Propositions.  The Proposed 2017-18 Budget, that is less than the allowable Tax Cap, was adopted by the Board.  The 0.78% budget increase is the lowest it has been in recent memory.  All information about the Budget and vote is on the website at http://ny01913874.schoolwires.net/domain/29

Mr. Cipriani and the Head of Security for OBEN Schools, Mr. Patrick Caffrey, addressed the Board with a Safety Team update.  They discussed exploring software and electronic means to increase security and streamline the check in process for people entering the schools.  The electronics are expected to be tested in the fall of 2017.

Thanks to the diligence and perseverance of Oyster Bay High School Assistant Principal Mr. Timothy McCarthy, the “No Stopping” signs in front of the high school has been changed to “No Parking” signs so parents can legally drop off their children on East Main Street.

Dr. Laura Seinfeld concluded her report by inviting the Board and the entire community to join her and many students in a shared reading opportunity on Wednesday, May 3 in the Oyster Bay High School Library at 7 pm.

The book is “Mockingbird” by Kathryn Erskine.  A Kirkus starred review says, "This heartbreaking story is delivered in the straightforward, often funny voice of a fifth-grade girl with Asperger's Syndrome."  The Oyster Bay High School and OBEN Public Libraries have extra copies to lend.

The next Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:30 pm in the OBHS Library.  All are welcome.
